BREAKING: Legendary JAV Director TOHJIRO Passes Away!

Some directors just shoot JAVs, and then there are a rare few who quietly shape an entire generation of actresses. And this week, the JAV industry lost one of those rare figures.

When news broke that Dogma's legendary director TOHJIRO had passed away, the shock rippled far beyond the studio walls. Even though most die-hard JAV fans already knew that he had been fighting Stage IV lung cancer for a while, some of them genuinely believed he would somehow beat the odds. After all, just weeks ago, he was still talking passionately about his final feature film.

MGStage founder was among the very first to break the news that the legendary director had passed away. He wrote in his tweet, "Just now, I got a message from Taku… May he rest in peace… I’m glad I got to see him one last time… I’m still so proud that I got to work with you so many times. In the afterlife, please keep making the movies you love and keep running wild with energy"

For the unversed, TOHJIRO's real name was Tomoo Ito. He wasn't simply another director in the JAV industry; he was one of its most recognizable personalities and creative forces. Also, he pioneered a specific JAV genre that we get to see in most adult films these days.

Long before becoming synonymous with Dogma, he debuted in 1986 and first earned attention in mainstream cinema with Gondola, a film that established him as a promising filmmaker. Eventually, his journey led him into the JAV industry.

That decision would define not only his own career, but the careers of countless actresses who debuted under him, and somewhere along the way, he also found the love of his life.

He married former JAV icon Mirei Asaoka, a name that instantly takes many fans back to an era when she was one of the defining sex symbols of an entire generation of Japanese men. Together, they spent decades building not only careers but a partnership that quietly endured behind the scenes. That partnership would eventually last.

The couple decided to produce a film together. Not long ago, TOHJIRO and Mirei revealed a crowdfunding campaign for their feature film Stage IV, an intensely personal feature chronicling his battle with terminal lung cancer. Mirei wasn't merely appearing in the project; she stepped behind the camera as producer and director, fulfilling a dream they had shared for decades.

Reading about the project at the time, in a tweet, I remember thinking how visibly frail TOHJIRO looked. The illness had clearly taken its toll, yet his eyes still carried that unmistakable spark of someone who simply wanted to make one more film.

TOHJIRO tweeted that he & Mirei had embarked on producing a film, collectively.

If you've attended industry events over the years, chances are you've seen TOHJIRO even if you weren't familiar with his work. During the heyday of the AV OPEN Awards in the late 2010s, he was impossible to miss. With his distinct style, a beanie with sunglasses on, flashing his trademark "Eagle Claw" hand gesture, and wearing that unforgettable grin. Ironically, he often stole attention away from the actresses themselves. The same actresses whom he mentored.

TOHJIRO became famous for developing Dogma's distinctive "M-Girl" style, creating productions centered around restraint, bondage, golden showers, and other extreme fetishes that many first-time JAV viewers would dismiss as simply shocking. Yet those who worked with him often describe something more nuanced.

Rather than treating actresses as disposables in niche productions, TOHJIRO built an entire creative identity of actresses willing to explore these demanding genres. For many actresses, joining the so-called "M-Girl Corps" wasn't just another experiment, but it literally became a career path.

He even demonstrated training methods publicly during promotional events, fully embracing the world he had helped create at DOGMA.

Perhaps that's why, after news of his passing spread, so many actresses associated with those productions immediately came forward to share heartfelt tributes. Not because they had simply worked together, but because he had changed their careers to some extent.

Rei Mizuna, who's among the very first actresses to work with him, wrote. "Director TOHJIRO, thank you for everything. You were the coolest director ever."

On the other hand, Maki Tomoda paid her deepest condolences, "When I heard the sad news, I was in a daze for a few days. It’s been 20 years since he looked after me! I hesitated about whether I should post this… but I decided to write down how I feel right now! When we met the other day, she called me “Maki-chan” just like she used to. That sound brought back so many memories. I’m so glad I went to see him that day. For better or worse, she lived life on his own terms, made his dreams come true, and to me, it seemed like she charged through life with boundless energy right until the very end. It was both enviable and overwhelming; it took a lot of strength on my part just to keep up with her… But it felt so good, and I think it really helped me grow."

But if there's one part of this story that truly stayed with me, it was his wife Mirei Asaoka's own words.

Earlier this year, she revealed publicly that TOHJIRO had been diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Alongside photographs of the two smiling together, she announced that they had transformed that painful reality into a film.

"I made a movie with someone very, very dear to me," she wrote. "The title is Stage IV. It's the story of my husband... and me." She explained that despite his declining health, filming began at the end of April and somehow reached completion only weeks later.

"I think it was truly difficult for my husband to play 'himself from a year ago' with his current physical condition." Yet somehow, he finished it.

Mirei also revealed something that made me smile through the sadness. Thirty-five years ago, they had made each other a promise that one day, they would make a movie together.

"My husband, who fulfilled the promise we made 35 years ago... is my hero." Sometimes the simplest sentences carry the greatest weight.

Knowing post-production normally takes months, Mirei chose to organize a special one-night-only preview screening because she wanted TOHJIRO to experience the finished work alongside the cast and crew who had helped bring it to life.

It wasn't just another premiere. It was a farewell to an endearing love story. Even TOHJIRO himself seemed to understand what this final project represented.

On May 27, he wrote on X: "I was happy to be able to immerse myself in making a movie I love one last time. The film Stage IV is packed with everything about Mirei Asaoka and me. Please be sure to watch it." Just days later, he reflected on another milestone. "It's been exactly 40 years since Gondola. I was able to shoot my new film, Stage IV. I was able to finish filming despite my poor health thanks to my passionate staff."

Reflecting on it now, you’re bound to get teary-eyed. But TOHJIRO's legacy won't simply be measured by the number of JAVs he directed. It will live on through the performers whose careers he helped shape, the audiences he challenged with ideas that were years ahead of their time, and the final film he created alongside the woman who stood beside him for more than three decades.

Some directors leave behind movies. TOHJIRO left behind an entire generation of artists, whose lives he so deeply touched, and they only have good things to say about him after his passing.

And somehow, I think that's exactly how he would have wanted to be remembered.

May he rest in peace. I never imagined the announcement of his death would follow so quickly since I came across a film that captured his final days. And I sincerely hope that his wife, Mirei Asaoka, now grieving the loss of the man she spent over thirty years beside, finds the strength to take care of herself.

We pay our deepest condolences to a great director, from everyone here at ZENRA.

Recently a number of US states and a few countries of note have enacted age verification requirements for adult sites. On the US front at least, legal experts both within and outside of our industry do not believe any will pass a constitutional test. However, since these laws currently are on the books and thus have the ability to be enforced, we are choosing to comply with them at this point in time.

ZENRA uses Bluecheck.me, a third party verification service, to perform this important task easy to install filtering software does infinitely better.

Information used in the verification process is not stored on our servers. Phone number and address verification is instant and uses database cross referencing (no calls, no SMS messages, nothing mailed to the address). ID verification takes about one minute and is performed 'blind' on Bluecheck's side where the ID is reviewed by someone unaware of what service the submitter is attempting to access.

Regardless of what method you choose, it costs you nothing, but does increase the cost of our operations in order to somehow make the internet a 'safer' place.
