Is Amateur Porn a Threat to JAV? – The Shift from Professional to Amateur
Over at ZENRA, we cover mainly professional JAV, but amateur JAV still sits under the Adult Video umbrella. Amateur Porn, which is better known as Doujin AV or independently made porn in Japan, has grown quite a lot in recent years. Today we’ll be talking about the rise of Amateur porn, the changes it brings, and the threat it poses to professional JAV.
The Rise of Amateurs
Fantia, MyFans, and FC2 are some of the major Amateur porn platforms in Japan. FC2 has long been a popular platform for Doujin AV, but many of their talents are one-and-done with their faces covered up or censored. Meanwhile, platforms like Fantia and MyFans have more established talents who will not just show their faces but try to build up their image as a star. Mainstream JAV won’t know who this is, but Rurutan had a breakthrough year in 2025 within Doujin AV.
Doujin AV Stars
We’re seeing an explosion of new talent hitting the Doujin scene, talents that could’ve debuted with big JAV studios but opted not to. Now we are also seeing what I believe is the start of a possible new trend of professional JAV stars going amateur. Riasu Mizutani and June Lovejoy are some small names who made the switch, with others dipping their toes. The biggest at the moment comes from Alice Nanase.
She recently made headlines when she announced her hiatus from JAV. She’s not done with porn, however because just days later, we saw her promoting works with Doujin AV accounts. Even male talents like the famous AV actor Genjin Moribayashi seem to have shunned the JAV scene to make Doujin AV with amateurs in Japan and abroad, from Taiwan to Korea.
The Pros Go Amateur?
Actresses and actors aren’t the only ones making the jump from proper JAV to Doujin AV, as the directors are getting in on it too. Rurutan enlisted the help of Nao Masaki and Samoari to make JAV-style Doujin. Some of these videos are virtually identical to their releases with mainstream studios. When the videos are basically identical, it begs the question, where does the line between amateur and Professional end and begin? Losing on-screen talent is one thing, but losing the behind-the-scenes productions might be an even bigger threat for JAV. Just as I was writing this piece, Nanami Matsumoto announced she was leaving professional JAV to make amateur porn.

Western Porn as a Preview for JAV
This shift to Amateur is one we really see in effect in Western Porn. OnlyFans has become a phrase to mean all things porn now. That’s how big it’s gotten over there. And I think it’s a possible preview for how things can play out in JAV. The biggest changes come from the stars and the studios. The biggest stars in Western porn aren’t just coming from the professional scene anymore because of the shift. Your Riley Reids, Mia Malkovas, Lana Rhodes, and all those big names all got their popularity in part thanks to their works with big studios and how that got their faces out there for people to see. Some of the biggest names today, like Bonnie Blue, are better known for their personal works. Today, star power is more fragmented, and most every pornstar has some sort of OnlyFans or personal account.

Pro Porn as a Launching Pad
Nowadays, you see quite a few talents work with big studios like Brazzers or Reality Kings, only to shift to their personal accounts. It’s a smart strategy to use these big sites and their access to large audiences to get your name out there and build off your personal brand. It’s also one we’ve seen used in JAV. Actresses like Erena So, Reiran Akame, or Tiny have used JAV basically to promote themselves and then move on to other works. It used to be the reverse, with the pros using amateur platforms to scout for new talent.
Pro Versus Amateur
Personally, I am a big fan of professional porn over amateur porn. The higher quality and curated talent make all the difference. Looking into amateur porn and you just find a massive flood of smut. If you thought there was too much JAV, you haven’t seen the torrent of Doujin AV that exists. Amateur has its appeal that is undeniable. People like that it’s not as manufactured, has a more realistic feeling, and has a diverse talent pool.
The women in Doujin AV can range far wider than what we usually see in JAV. More plus-size body types, more mature women, and more alternative styles like women with tattoos and piercings. Looking into some of the bigger names of Doujin AV today, and I have to say I’m impressed with the talent pool. These are great-looking ladies, and it’s JAV’s loss they never joined.
This is For the Performers
That’s my perspective as a fan, but for the performers themselves, Amateur can look so much more appealing. They get more freedom of expression in their image, their video choices, and better payout. Actresses like Alice or Sumire Mizukawa are just better suited for the Doujin scene. They aren’t like your typical JAV actress and don’t fit the classic Idol image at all.

Sticker Shock
That’s great for the talent, but for fans, there's another big negative to the Amateur scene, and it’s the price. My God, your eyes will water at the sticker shock of what some accounts will charge. Monthly subscriptions that run into the tens of thousands of Yen (hundreds in USD). Single PPV videos can reach up to almost $200 USD. In an age with so much free porn and people who laugh at the idea of paying for legal porn at all (please support ZENRA), this type of pricing feels laughable. As a fan, it’s downright terrible.
Threat or Competition
Rather than see Doujin AV as a threat to JAV, it should be seen as competition and an opportunity to be better. Because I hope this isn’t the future of JAV. A better future of JAV would have healthy Doujin AV and JAV coexisting with each other. For that to happen, change is going to need to happen with JAV. The laws need to change to support easier production, agencies need to do better to acquire talent and keep them, and studios need to be bolder and more interesting to keep viewers’ attention. As a professional JAV fan, please support good porn. Otherwise, we’ll all be drowning in a sea of smartphone-shot smut of someone masturbating for 5 minutes to muted music in the background.
