A Brief History of JAV: Moodyz, Part 2: Glorious is where the Sun doesn't Shine

Published : July 28th, 2020 Written by WoodOfTheRisingSun

In part 1 of our history of Moodyz, we covered the pre-history and early history of the studio and related companies.  Here in part 2, we will covered some of the more famous or infamous series, and conclude with a viewer's guide to current current series.

In the early days, Moodyz's brand means pushing the boundary of morality police  It was two prong approach, one is making the mosaic thinner, the other is more over the top or radical themes and story settings. After the inital launch phase of the company was successful, Moodyz took a look at the two-prong approach and made an important decision, and it's a split decision: double down on thin mosaic, but de-emphasize extreme themes.  So in 2002 Moodyz created a new series Digital Mosaic and again as Hyper Digital Mosaic (as we already discussed in part 1), and some of the less mainstream genres were abandoned or spun-off (as also discussed in part 1).

By the way, when you want to understand the different labels or series that a studio put out, the studio's own website isn't necessarily a good place to start.  Like this page promising to introduce the labels.  Just feed if to Google Translate, and you will understand that language barrier isn't the issue.  Typical marketing language in Japan is always filled with a lot of words but no meanings.

Real Anal Fucking

I'm old but not that old.  Yet I have witnessed the altitude towards anal sex, both in real and porn worlds, to have changed so much and so many times, I am a bit dumbfounded.  So I'm hesitant to say anything on this genre, especially in the clamped space of this article.  Whatever I say is bound to be wrong to some people in some place, some of the time.  But to be clear, I am in general a fan of anal sex and anal porn.  It is kind of an extreme genre in JAV, meaning a idol might not do it, for the reason of prestige, or a pretension of it, rather than her sexual preference or acceptance.  Real Anal Fuck is one of Moodyz's series on this genre.  Since 2014, the series have effectively been terminated.  There was one last installment in 2016, but it didn't turn out to revive the series.  A similar series Bukkake Creampie Anal FUCK was also concluded in 2017.  Now anal sex is still within Moodyz's range (mostly in the Moodyz Acid label, to be covered in part 3 of this series) but it no longer has a dedicated series.

Bus Tour

This rather modestly named Bus Tour series used to be a special event for Moodyz.  A bus tour to a Western audience may sound like sleepy/cranky senior citizens, but in Japan, it's a mandatory social and team-building activity for any company big and small.  So Moodyz turn this real world corporate culture thing into an epic orgy title.  The minimal number of female idols is 10 (except for a few “sideline” titles) and the average run time is five hours.  Early on, this series played a major role establishing Moodyz’s stature and prowess.  It’s fair to say these titles (even just the DVD covers themselves) were grand enough to attract prospective young hotties when she consider which studio to join.

However, over the years, the scale was gradually diminished. First it became an annual event, down from typically 3 titles per year.  Then finally it was suspended after 2014.  Obviously production cost is a big concern.  It’s not hard to imagine most of these titles were money-loser on their own.  However, other factors may also came into the decision.  As both the studio and the roster of idols become more prestigious, the non-economic benefits of these epic titles became smaller and outweighted by the economic cost of such major productions.  This same trend is also noticeable in many other JAV studios.

Female Teacher Humiliation Gangbang

Female Teacher Humiliation Gangbang: is actually an ongoing series, running pretty much continuously since 2007, currently belonging in the DIVA label.  This is a common theme in JAV and other top studios also make titles with the same theme.

Bukkake

In historic retrospect, Dream Woman (ドリームウーマン) is really poorly named series, too generic and uninformative.  The real theme of the series is Bukkake, or at least facial cumshot.  Back in 2002, the very infantcy of Moodyz, there was another studio WAAP Entertainment with a very successful (and aptly named) series Dream Shower, so Moodyz just mimicked the name of the series, switching out the informative word shower, a very crumsy move, if you ask me.   This is not a genre I am very fond of, so I won't say much.  But it's a genre enjoyed by quite a few fans, and AVGL-142 starring Maria Ozawa was a very memorable title for me (which has been delisted, unfortunately).  Like the other more fringe genres, facial cumshots were also important in Moodyz's early stage but recently de-emphasized as Moodyz's brand image became more mainstream. The last Dream Woman title was released in 2015.

Loss of virginity

Loss of virginity is another slightly hardcore series that has been discontinued. The theme is to witness a debutante's loss of virginity.  Usually there's some expounding of backstory and emotional crisis for the piercing of the hymen.  The last solo title of the series was in mid-2013.  By today's standard the concept is pretty archaic.

Sunny Porn

Sex on the Beach was one of my favorite series.  In the real world sex happens mostly indoor, especially at night.  Nudity and sex in broad day night is a refreshing fantasy for those of us without a private island or beach. In this series, Moodyz take one of their hottest idols, a male cast, and a crew, fly them down to Okinawa, a kind of foreign country within Japan, in terms of skin colors, culture, climate and geography.  So the innocuously named "Sex on the Beach" is actually a major production incurring a big production cost and giving off an exotic, escapade-to-paradise vibe.  Sometimes the idol herself may never have set foot on a tropical island before.  Anyway, a vacation to Okinawa to any Japanese is like a vacation in Hawaii for any American, so it's pretty reliable that the idol is extra happy and excited for her turn in this series.  Unfortunately the last installment of the series was released in the summer of 2012 and the economic climate since then has been too weak to continue.

Tan Lines is also a similar theme, I myself find the covers quite attractive with the sunny outdoor, but I'm not a fan of the exagerrated and fake-looking tan, and often you get no meaningful outdoor scenes in the whole video since tan line is the main idea.

Sex With Blacks

Interracial porn is always a bit controversial.  Most people have their set idea of this genre, so it's neither necessary nor helpful for me to share my thoughts on this subject.  For the topic of the day which is Moodyz, the genre was an important attention-grabber for the very early history of the studio, but soon it's given up to other studios.  There were two series: Black Men and Sex (黒人とセックス) and Black Semen in L.A. (ブラックザーメン in L.A.).

Coming up in part 3

I was rather hoping to complete the history of Moodyz with just two parts.  But the topic just got out of control, so the final part, on the currnet and on-going series and labels of Moodyz, will have to be made into Part 3.  See you!  Please let me know in the comments if you find Dark History to be an interesting topic.  It's quite exhausting to prepare so some feedback is welcome!

Great write-up, with some fascinating information and historical context. I really like these unbiased investigations into a company's past and the motivations behind their economic decision making. I hope you expand on this by (if it's even possible) investigating how royalties work in the JAV industry, or if it even exists at all; whether the really big actresses from the present, and past, actually earn income off the sales of their titles, whether it be physical media or online downloads and streaming - especially after they've retired. We know of high profile actresses who've stopped the sales of their titles online, so does that mean that they were earning income off of it, even after retirement? Otherwise it would make sense for retirees to try and stop the sales of their titles almost immediately after they leave the industry, because there's almost no incentive in it for them for their titles to continue selling indefinitely.
Anyways, I especially like your detailing of the "Bus Tour" genre - I've been looking for info on this forever, so I hope you can go into more detail in a separate article in the future. The two Bus Tour features of Ohashi Mihisa (MIRD-069 and MIRD-136) are two of my favorite JAV titles of all time, and I'd like to know if these "fans" were actually real amateurs off the street, or semi-professional "liquid actors" that are allowed to on the occasion of these bus videos to actually have intercourse with the actress (I can swear I've seen some of them in other "fan appreciation" videos, but I can't be exactly sure; some of them genuinely come across as amateurs, but again, can't be sure).
Thanks again for this article and I'll look forward to your posts in the future.

JAV stars, like most non AAA-rank Hollywood actors, are paid per performance. No royalties. Before you may think that's unfair, do realize a big name makes close to $2000USD for a day's work. Someone like Eimi Fukada working gosh knows how many days a month is making a pretty penny.

I'd love to see more JAV history type posts! I love reading about how different labels were formed, and where they started to where they are now. And not to mention digging into all the different sub-labels that seem to exist. A good writeup!

Great writeup once again. Love the emphasis on Moodyz especially, as it seems to be a big dog in the wilderness of JAV studios. Are there plans to delve into other longstanding studios as well?
Btw, early Moodyz interracial movies, where they flew out to LA, are a treat. They really milked 2-3 titles out of each actress from I'm guessing each trip, but I can't blame them, flights are expensive! Even though JAV has mostly relied on the same familiar crop of domestic black male talent for a while now, I'm always eagerly awaiting more foreign travel JAV, whether its to Africa, LA, or, most recently, Bermuda.

Our writers plan to do more like this. There's many studios out there and many have unique histories.
