By the time a JAV actress makes it up to the up and comer territory, this is where the real competition starts because all of these up-and-comers are vying for the next upgrade, the more stable starlets that have a lot more staying power and stronger pull and influence in the industry (which obviously comes with all sorts of financial incentives). At this point of a JAV actresses career, she will probably be featured in a lot of different multi-actress JAV movies. There are two interpretations on why this happens: one could be that putting all these up and comers in one movie helps pull their names up to compete with the starlets, but also the opposite where they are put in like a gladiator sex ring where they compete for all the spoils. In this JAV, Ichika, Yui and Aoi actually have proven that they have great sexual chemistry with each other, so they highlight their sexual skills in this test of sexual endurance for the lucky ‘amateurs’. Well, we all know who ends up winning the spoils eventually.

I would say that the Starlet level is where the JAV actress has now reached enough fame and relevance that she’s reliably have a lucrative career (at least for the time that she chooses to stay in the industry). Interestingly, especially in recent JAV times, there is a trend of formerly prolific freelancers eventually settling down into exclusive contracts. This is not necessarily a requirement to be in the Starlet category of fame, some freelancers rise to Starlet and even Super Star status while remaining in freelance. For Ichika to pick and settle in on exclusivity is probably a work-life balance choice that communicates that she’s already living the good life at that point, and can now slow down her extremely busy sexual schedule with a more predictable release schedule with better productions.

And finally, the top of the tier: JAV Superstardom. To be a superstar, a JAV actress needs to capture the cultural zeitgeist of the moment she’s in. She needs to be iconic, not only in JAV but also sometimes even outside of JAV. And some of them even maintain their relevancy after their JAV careers. There is an aspect of dominance that separates the starlets from the superstar too, where the starlets simply do not compare with the superstar on one aspect, which justifies the level of fame that the superstars have earned. For Ichika, I am confident to say that she’s currently enjoying superstar status simply because she has headlined the Bako bus as the main attraction (usually put at the very back). She is just a consummate performer and her charm dwarfs the rest of the cast, in my opinion. Truly deserving of the current fame she’s at, I hope she has more years with us! She’s still relatively fresh in the biz, and there’s plenty more she has to offer!
