Samoari Retrospective: Is He Really That Bad? Part 1

Hey guys, Oppaira here. I’ve seen Samoari a few times and every time I watch him I think to myself: I’m not sure if I love it or hate it. A lot of people are very outspoken about him being awful but I’ve found that I have mixed opinions at times. So I decided the best way to do it is do what I do best: analyze a bunch of his videos and figure it out.
I’m going to be doing a multi-part series where I go through various aspects of his directing style and eventually come to a conclusion. To start off in this series I’m going to give you an overview of Samoari as a director as well as the hypothesis/questions I have. I’m going to avoid any opinions in this post, you’ll have to wait until future entries in the series.
WIth that said let’s go find out about the most divisive director in town.
Sam's Background
Samoari got started back in 2016 working for mid-sized studios like Rocket, Dream Ticket, and Waap. He directed a lot of the stuff you’ve seen from them for years, like Maso Men and Dream Shower. It wasn’t until the pandemic when Moodyz gave him a shot at his own thing, and soon after every studio was letting him be him.
Samoari now works with a lot of different studios so long as they give him some space to do this thing. That’s basically every major studio you can think of, although some of them seem way more keen on working with him. SOD, for example, doesn’t really do much with him, while others like Madonna, S1, Moodyz, and Das are more than happy to work with him. He's developed a pretty easily identifiable style that really only works when you give him creative freedom to do as he pleases.
What is Samoari Known For?
Firstly, Samoari is known most for his camera angles. Like them or not, Samoari uses a lot of unique camera angles that nobody else does. It makes his content easily identifiable because literally nobody uses them.
Here are some further examples of what you can see from Samoari. Again, things you aren’t seeing elsewhere that are perhaps the easiest way to identify a Samoari film.
Samoari is also known for his maple nipple play. He does a lot of nipple play stuff, and when I say he does a lot I really mean a lot. That has always been his thing and he’s had videos centred around guys getting off to nipple play. Like a guy cumming while the actress is just pinching his nipples.
Samoari likes to use more spicy outfits as well. It’s quite common to see actresses in full body lace outfits or Calvin Klein underwear. Maybe spicy isn't the right word for CK, but he loves to use it for extended periods in ways other directors do not.
There’s certainly a lot of other slutty outfits you can see from him as well. Or, quite honestly, things most directors would never think to use.
Samoari also likes to use unusual settings. It’s not uncommon to see him in something you never expected to see, like a parking garage or even crazier in a porta potty.
He also has a home he likes to use a lot for his videos, and there are several that are just two adults having a fling for a weekend. If you’ve seen enough Samoari videos you’ve seen this home and recognize it quite well.
Lastly is the style of performing Samoari tends to prefer which I would describe as natural slutty. He tries to bring out the inner slut people already have, letting them run with it however that manifests.
Questions / Hypotheses
So what kind of questions am I actually trying to figure out? Well ultimately I want to figure out if he’s as bad as people claim, but that’s the obvious one that doesn’t require as much thought. I want to go several steps deeper to see if there are specific things he does right or wrong. Here’s a taste of what I’m interested in finding out
- Are his camera angles always bad or are some actually good?
- Are his bad camera angles consistently bad or can certain other qualities make them better?
- Is his nipple play always bad or overwhelming, or is his excessive male nipple play a myth?
- Does he actually have good outfits and are they consistently good?
- Do the outfits belong to the films he’s producing or are they just randomly tossed in?
- Do the random settings he uses work or are they nonsensical?
- Is there a certain theme or plot that he uses that stands out as being done well?
- Do the performers in his video perform well? Or at least better than usual?
- Is there a particular kind of actress, in any way, shape, or form, that do well in his videos?
These are just some of the questions that I’ve been thinking about for a long time about Samoari. There are likely some questions I haven’t thought of that will naturally come up as I keep watching his videos and doing the analysis. That being said, I like having some things to look out for as it makes me more aware both when watching and reviewing.
Methodology
So just how exactly am I going to find the answers to these questions? I’ve seen some Samoari videos but I haven’t quite seen everything I need to. That’s largely because my goal is to watch a wide range of videos to make sure I’ve seen every side of his directing I can. I want this to be as comprehensive of a review as I can do, and that means watching dozens of his films in every which way.
To elaborate a little more, I went through his catalogue identifying all the different styles of videos he’s produced. I’m talking with/without plots, solo/group, veterans/debuts, and everything in between. I’m planning to watch across a wide range of actresses and studios as well. Simply put, I’m going to watch as many different things from him to make sure the review is thorough. The above is just a taste of what I've seen, and there's plenty more to be seen.
Conclusion
To round this out I will say that this is a journey that will take a bit of time. This analysis isn’t going to be easy to do because I not only have to watch lots of films but there’s a lot to analyze in the videos. There’s very likely a lot of themes, plots, and even actresses I’ll be watching for it that I know I’m not a fan of. For example, I’m not an Ichika Matsumoto fan, but I know they have such a close relationship that it would be wrong to skip her (and I promise I will watch her).
I’ll also mention that I’ve already seen a lot of his videos preparing for the post. I wanted to make this post before I finished watching and did the analysis so I could try and be a bit impartial. But, at the same time, I didn’t want this to come out months before the remaining posts. My guess is you’ll start seeing more of these in the late spring or early summer as I get through everything.
If I’m being honest, I have a feeling the answer will be “it depends”. That is to say that I have hopes there are things he does well. But we’ll have to wait and see what comes out of my research. I think many of us already have opinions about him and they can be hard to shake, but I hope you’ll try and be open-minded with me as I try to figure out if this dude should be left out to pasture or heralded as he seemingly thinks.
At any rate I hope you’ve enjoyed my rambling. I’m curious to see if others have thoughts about him or if there are certain films you think I need to watch. And with that I’m off to go watch some more Samoari films. Until next time!
