One of the more confusing things that a new fan could encounter as they start learning more about JAV is the concept of Exclusive and Freelance actresses. While the terminology is self-evident in its meaning, in practice, there are worlds of difference in how an actress could maneuver in her career because of this. Well, let me help you demystify what’s actually going on here!

Before that, let me just say beforehand that there are many many factors, societal, cultural and systemic in play here that to condense all the factors of an actress career into just the freelance vs exclusive flattens much of the dynamics at play. Firstly, let me just mention the built in systems that influence everything about human society like capitalism, patriarchy, globalization and etc. But we’re not gonna dive deep into that. So let's focus on the JAV industry and how it works. At its core, it starts with the Talent, a hot girl deciding what that she wants to be fucked for a career. To help them make the most of their career choice, most talents often are under agencies that help them manage and negotiate their career. Agencies are independent entities that focus on middlemanning the Talent and the studios. They can even hold actresses from talents from competing studios. Next up, there is the studio who are more responsible for the production and distribution of the content of their product. Last in this chain is us, the fans, who through our wallets and our engagement, help the studios create more opportunities for the talents.

But at the end of the day, the studios are all powerful as they control the means of production. In a nutshell if I were to bullet point every major idea about the major differences between freelancing vs exclusivity for an actress, it would look something like this:

But that’s no fun, so let me get into what each of those bullet points means with a direct comparison of two popular actresses who appeared in JAV at around the same time and are of the same age. Mana Sakura, a beloved and respected exclusive actress for SOD all of her career vs Ai Uehara, a trailblazing freelancer who achieved immense popularity in her short career.

Output

Mana Sakura debuted in STAR 334 in the year 2012 at 18 years old. Since then she has followed a rigid release structure of an estimated 1 new JAV movie a month(not counting the compilations, omnibuses, rereleases and etc.), with a few hiatus breaks in between. As a result, with her over a decade-long career, she has probably produced around 200+ movies (I apologize for the lack of exactness but it's hard to find good figures here). Despite this respectable amount, her output is still dwarfed by Ai Uehara’s.

By comparison, Ai Uehara debuted in 2011 at 18 years old too. Her release calendar was massive, with multiple full length JAV movies in a month, even sneaking in the occasional single scene and uncensored stuff too. Even though Ai Uehara retired early in 2016 after just 5 years, and Mana is still currently active, Ai Uehara’s movie output is in the thousands(according to her own confession). There is just no way that Mana is gonna surpass Ai’s output at this pace. The flipside of this is the relaxed and predictable pacing of Mana’s career has surely influenced her longevity in the scene. Ai Uehara needed to be fucked multiple times on a weekly basis for her massive JAV movie output in her 5 year career. Mana had 4-5 sex scenes a month.

Creative Control

Ai Uehara is a freak. For a woman as pretty as her, her sexual appetites are pretty out there with her penchant for gangbangs, gokkun and anal sex. Which makes sense that she had such a large amount of output but also in the variety of her movies, even venturing into the legally murky waters of uncensored JAV. This made Ai Uehara to be a maverick figure in JAV Lore. With how Ai has curated her catalogue too has endeared her to the JAV fandom, since she has movies that cater to the most vanilla to the extreme hardcore end so her fans can choose according to their mood for spiciness.

In contrast, Mana Sakura’s SOD curated output is mostly vanilla, but it can have its spikes of cinnamon every now and then like a few lesbian, gangbang and bukkake releases because SOD does have its quirks. But her movies never go far off to the deep end. SOD, as a company, needs to have a certain consistency of their brand identity, especially for their SOD Star brand. Which is why Mana was beholden to and was managed rigidly to adhere to those standards not only in her JAV output but also in her mainstream appearances, guestings, personal life, and etc. This phenomenon makes an exclusive actress’ image more controlled and limited vs the freedom and variety of a freelance career.

Competition

First lets start this segment by stating the obvious: JAV competition is ferocious. So much porn comes out of Japan, and everyone who participates is in constant competition and cooperation with each other. But when it comes to the topic at hand, the competition is a bit of a different flavor between exclusive actresses vs between freelancers. Mana Sakura since her debut had to compete with all the debutants within the SOD studio. She was once one of those upstart debutants, and outlived other SOD debutants of her past and present as she carved her own niche and grew her fanbase within the SOD ecosystem. Studios only have so much resources and can only keep a limited number of talents, otherwise that would beat the point of exclusivity. Since the shelf life of a JAV star is quite short, Exclusive studios also need to find and grow new talent to stay top dog of the industry or risk turning stale and losing popularity.

On the other side, with Ai Uehara’s freelancing career, there is no in-studio competition to speak of. While no freelance studio is as big as the exclusive ones, combined there’s plenty of financial resources to support the freelancing workforce like Ai Uehara to work in. The real competition is with her own personal branding. To be and to maintain relevance, she had to take as many jobs as possible not just to earn but to build her brand. There are few freelancers who survive for long without churning out multiple releases. Basically, she has to keep on moving like a shark or else. For those who decrease their output, that's might be a sign that they are on their way out.

Prestige

Of course, there’s a reason why people naturally flock to these Exclusive studios because of the natural prestige and reputation they have earned by having rosters of amazingly beautiful JAV stars and starlets for a sustained amount of time. When Mana Sakura debuted for SOD star in 2013, she was ultimately supported by the brand and the fanbase the brand has cultivated to become the icon that she is now. And conversely, Mana’s presence in the studio also helps their brand maintain that gained prestige by allowing them to have the economy to fund better produced movies,marketing campaigns and of course, finding new talent to continue the cycle. Top exclusive and well behaved talents like Mana who have attained a level of veterancy make the industry better by infusing a touch of much needed class in an inherently lavicious system.

For a freelancer like Ai Uehara, the freelancer studio market is made of many smaller studios with varying degrees of prestige, which also presupposes varying levels of quality unlike an expected ‘standard’ set by exclusive studios for their products. But there is an unexpected advantage to bouncing around between studios for varying flavors and styles of sex work. One pattern I've noticed is that the JAV starlet’s “talent” level can become immediately apparent and gain fame/notoriety quickly/over time based on how she sexually performs, as opposed to the constricted branding of an exclusive actress which tends to lean towards tame and vanilla despite the varying demands of the JAV audience.. Other prolific freelancers leveraged this spectacularly, like Yui Hatano, Ichika Matsumoto and the like.. But none of them did it as well as, in my opinion, the freelancer GOAT, Ai Uehara.

Freelance vs Exclusive

So which one is better? Holistically, that’s a subjective question that's hard to answer though I hope my comparison between Mana vs Ai helped illuminate how it works (at least in how I managed to piece all this together despite not understanding Japanese). But lets talk numbers for an objective view At least in my quick survey of Oppaira’s sales reports: In terms of physical sales, the exclusive JAV wins out. But for digital sales, it seems the freelancers have an advantage. And so like most debates worth having, the results are inconclusive. The pathway the JAV star took to fame is an interesting narrative and it helps us fans build a connection with them and their journey to fame. And it’s such a fluid phenomenon as well, to follow along with a JAV actresses’ career and see them debut as an exclusive and then find success as a freelancer, or start off as a freelancer and then wind down their career into an exclusive contract.
