For the longest time, I was under the impression that the traditional Showa Era bathhouse in our era only existed in three places: in the minds of older folk who may have used them forty years ago, as abandoned relics in parts of Japan time forgot (I can attest to seeing an abandoned one), and as sets that production companies can use. I was wrong...and thankfully so! On a recent vacation, on a whim we picked out a local bathhouse to try out as our hotel lacked bathing facilities beyond what was in the room. And would you believe it: the place we arrived at was so Showa it almost felt like a pastiche.
From featuring the weird Showa Era (yes, a word that will be used a lot in this review!) massage chairs with the weird rollers to selling bottled milk to the analog scales to selling individual packages of shampoo and body soap for ten yen...and yes, THE BANDAI. IT EXISTS. The second most glorious job in a traditional Japanese bathhouse, the elevated chair staffed by someone whose duty it is to accept payments and hand out shampoo if needed also has a secondary task on keeping their eyes on (both!) sides of the bathhouse. What glory! Only second to sansuke of course which sadly, unlike this bathhouse, may not have survived to the modern era.
That brings us to today's update, which yes, almost certainly was filmed on a set, does push the Showa vibe just as hard and this time with a magical twist: two friends of opposite genders are in for a surprise because in the TSF SENTO, if a pair goes in, they go out with bodies and thus genders swapped! Man to woman, woman to man (don't ask me what happens if two futanari go in though it could end up something like The Fly if they aren't careful!) with effects that supposedly fade away in several hours...until they don't!
ROCKET is known for being the odd-ball JAV studio nonpareil and the combination of weirdness that still stays grounded enough to attract a mainstream audience is perfectly balanced in this update. The casting may not be of known faces, but the acting of everyone involved is excellent. They really sell it with in my opinion at least the standout scene not being the bathing nor sex itself, but the way they sit next to each other in the sento: both the actress and actor must have received excellent gender emulation guidance that would put a Takurazuka performer to shame.
TSF SENTO: WHERE BODIES ARE SWAPPED is an unusual movie, but handled very well. It won't be for everyone and that's fine. For those who take the plunge, they will be well-rewarded as the comedy aspects--something rare in most any adult movie not only exist here, but work so darn well. This one's funny, this one's sexy, and it's also pure Showa!
