The King of Japanese Gonzo

What makes a great JAV director? There are many ways to describe a good director for JAV, but ultimately it all boils down to creativity and execution. In the endeavor of crafting any form of JAV we have: a subject matter, the beautiful JAV starlet, and then there is the concept, what to create with the subject. It is the director’s responsibility to find the right treatment for the creation of a captivating work. In terms of JAV, the director needs to focus on two things: visuals, and eroticism. Depending on the subject and theme of the movie, there are many different ways to treat these movies. And in JAV, there is no shortage of talent working within this massive media industry.

Now here’s Company MatsuO, the king of JAV Gonzo. One of the great early adopters of Japanese Gonzo (or as they call it in Japan, Hamedori). He is probably the man who is most emulated by all of the recent gonzo shoots being released from his time up til now. Hamedori is a style of shooting AV like it was a personal diary. And it usually involves just two people: The actress and the director/actor. The success of the genre probably amounts from the low budget requirements to shoot a hamedori film, as it’s shot guerilla documentary style with the gems getting cut into a decent film at the editing room.

What made Company MatsuO special is the treatment of his subject matter. Company MatsuO started out with true amateur shoots. In the pre-internet era, he sent out classified ads in Ladies Comics (sex manga comics targeted for women). The first meeting with the woman is through her voice, where he calls her and checks for interest for the AV shoot. Then he films himself travelling to the woman’s chosen meeting spot, filming the various sights and sounds on the way to a sexual rendezvous with a woman he has not met yet. You get a glimpse of the mundane visuals of Japan, with the sexual tension of what is about to happen that he captures with his director’s eye.

As he meets the woman, they engage in flirtatious conversation. Company MatsuO is lighthearted, likeable and soft spoken which made him charming to the opposite sex. His true skill lies in his conversational vibe and demeanor. He manages to get the girl to open up about her life, her hopes and dreams… as well as reveal her sexuality in her own way. There is no mistake that the man is trying to get into her pants, but surprisingly a lot is revealed in this pre-bedroom foreplay. There is a calm tension and intensity in the way he films or photographs the women in his videos, especially in public where it’s more difficult to be sexual, that just emanates from his desire towards the actress. Company MatsuO has big dick energy (both literally and metaphorically), and this is what separates a skilled Gonzo director like Company MatsuO from a dull one. There are many many imitators due to the lower budget requirements for films like this, some of them are pretty good as well but there is only one Company MatsuO.

His ability to open up a woman not just sexually but to paint a portrait of her life through the lens of an intimate sexscapade also comes out artistically: both visual and narrative, as Company MatsuO is able to edit and create some visually compelling glamorous shots of women out of a simple sexual rendezvous. I am often amazed with the output from his releases: from the cover photos, to the quality of the conversations to the eroticisms of the sexual deed itself. Although there is a language barrier between me personally that keeps me from understanding the conversations happening in his films, I am still able to interpret enough from the body language and overall vibe to see that more often than not, the woman is getting charmed off panties.

Although I'm not able to procure his earlier stuff, I find that he’s still releasing videos with a similar enough style with amateur women. His Convenient Women series really shows his penchant for the documentary style. Now we move on from amateurs to true blue porn stars. This Company MatsuO x Aino Kishi movie is actually one of the first of his movies that I found. I’m a massive Aino Kishi fan, I have combed through her filmography so I know which are the stand-out movies. This one stood out for me because compared to all the other gonzo documentary style movies Aino starred in, I found that there was something unique about the visuals and the visceral reactions of Aino in this movie. He captures her playfulness and her best assets in his romp with her in a way that felt genuine to me, and in the case of Aino who is already one of the most genuine actresses in JAV, this made the movie a highlight for sure.

Another early discovery of mine, here I’m realizing that Company MatsuO is quite in demand that his collabs. Here is one with the studio Prestige, with Nao Wakana, a very hot and popular star from 10 years ago. Not a lot of variance here from the last one, it’s actually just using the exact same formula. Plenty shots of just chatting, dining out, hanging around sunsets. Company MatsuO’s natural charisma just brings out Nanami’s full toothy smile, and she’s just smiley and happy throughout the whole film, capturing the steamy beach rendezvous in such a compelling way.

The final movie for this short introduction, we have Company MatsuO working with the iconic Riku Minato. And apparently, there is some back story here where Company MatsuO shot Riku early on in her career and it left a big mark on her. Five years later, nearing Riku’s retirement, Company MatsuO was tasked to reunite with Riku before the sunset of her career. The chemistry is palpable, Riku could not contain her excitement in working with Company MatsuO again, she literally cries tears of joy during their first scene. The rest of the movie is just an astounding collection of scenes and images of a full sexual experience with an engaged Riku. Whenever a gal is that enthusiastic about shooting scenes and taking photos shots and generally fucking around.
