Remembering Max-A's Peak: The Decline of One of JAV's Top Studios

If you have been following JAV since around the 2000s and 2010s, you may still recall that the scene was a bit different by then. Way before the Kanna Setos and Yua Mikami, before S1, Faleno, and SOD were dominating the charts, the studio Max-A was the place to be for any aspiring actress.

Best known for their two premier labels, Samansa (Samantha) and Calen (Karen), Max-A had the reputation for being the home of the most beautiful JAV actresses. Keep in mind that this was before social media and aggressive talent scouting. Studios usually have a hard time looking for and convincing exceptionally beautiful talent to have sex on camera instead of going mainstream or modeling. But Max-A managed to grab only the best. This cream of the crop group includes super stars such as Maria Takagi, Sora Aoi, Rio (Tina Yuzuki), Mihiro, and many others.

Since at least 1997, MAX-A has been associated with the Kuki group, once one of Japan’s largest AV company networks. Kuki was like a conglomerate of sorts, and they included Alice Japan, Big Morkal, Sexia, and of course, Max-A itself. Kuki's hold on the industry was like DMM of today, using the X-City website for selling and renting JAV. This big network allowed Max-A to market their talents and distribute their content with ease.

Like many of the older and larger AV companies in Japan, Kuki has been a member of the ethics group Nihon Ethics of Video Association (NEVA), a self-regulatory body which was designed to monitor content and enforce the censorship mosaic required in Japanese porn videos. This resulted in many of the older videos produced by Kuki having a large, blocky analog mosaic as opposed to the newer thinner digital mosaics now in common use.

Due to these changes, studios under Kuki such as Max-A have focused on selling their back catalogue, re-releasing them with thinner mosaics. You may have noticed this in older JAV titles, with “Barely There” mosaics in their title, banking on changes in mosaicing practices.

NEVA also underwent a series of crises in the 2000s. In August 2007, the Tokyo Police raided NEVA’s office to investigate their materials. In 2008, several key NEVA members, including a former CEO, were arrested for producing videos that have been deemed as having insufficient digital mosaic. The body was eventually dissolved sometime in 2017.

As for Max-A, we have no records as to why things suddenly changed post-2017. However, it is likely that internal adjustments and recalibrations happened within the organization in the same period, as a response to changes in distribution channels, regulations, and fierce competition from other studios.

Considered as one of the all-time greats despite her slim videography, Maria Takagi was already a well-known actress and gravure model before she entered JAV. She made her debut under Max-A’s Calen label, called “Super Star”, XV-111, in 2002. The Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun reported that she was the highest-paid JAV actress in 2003.

Her entry into JAV made her even more famous, eventually landing a few roles in mainstream films.

You may recognize her in Noroi: The Curse, a 2005 Japanese horror classic.

She did 15 videos for Max-A, after which she eventually retired as an adult actress.

Another all-time great is Sora Aoi, who debuted for Max-A under the Samansa label. Known for her classic Japanese beauty and big breasts, Sora eventually moved on to S1 and became one of the most popular actresses of her generation.

Sora-chan was not only an adult star; she became a crossover sensation, acting in many non-JAV films and becoming a Japanese celebrity known across the world. To think that Max-A found such diamond in the rough testifies to their impeccable taste.

Yua Aida made her debut (KTD-073) under Kuki and another video under Max-A’s Samansa line, XV-163. Known for her slender frame and girl-next-door looks, she eventually had a long and fruitful career in JAV.

Like most actresses from Max-A, Yua was eventually picked up by S1 and then by Moodyz. She reached her peak under these two studios.

While Akiho Yoshizawa became known under different studios such as Alice Japan and S1, she also made some of her early videos under Max-A in 2003, such as XV-143 and XV-128.

Akiho Yoshizawa proved to be such a big asset for Max-A that they continued releasing remasters of her works until the 2010s.

Mihiro released her first work with the Calen label in 2005, XV-220. This much anticipated release, along with the Alice Japan title “Little Angel”, drew up a storm in the JAV world. Prior to doing JAV, Mihiro was a very successful gravure model. Mihiro stayed with Max-A and Alice Japan until she transferred to S1 and Maxing in 2007 and started doing real sex scenes instead of simulated ones.

Even while working in JAV, she appeared in mainstream movies such as Ju-on: The White Ghost, part of the Ju-On series (The Grudge).

Right after bagging Mihiro, Max-A hit gold once again when they found Tina Yuzuki. This beautiful half-Portuguese lass first appeared in XV-312, “Hot Wind.” People were immediately mezmerized by Tina Yuzuki’s naive looks and exotic beauty.

This was all before she took on the "Rio" name and her full blossoming under S-1 and Idea Pocket. Max-A Rio was still visibly green and hasn't yet developed the elegance of her peak years, but she made up for it with her charms. Moreover, her Max-A works were also less serious and more humorous, which makes them great material for a rewatch.

Max-A banked on their super stars for many years, occasionally grabbing some beauties such as Aino Kishi (debuting in XV-632), Haruka Itoh (debuting in XV-646), and another hafu, Cecil Fujisaki (XV-704).

However, it was only in 2010 that they will get another bombshell in Nana Ogura, who debuted in XV-863. This cum swallowing natural kept the studio in the charts with her enthusiastic performances.

In the 2010s, Max-A managed to sign several other exceptional cuties such as Ai Nikaido (XV-1073) and Mei Kurose (XV-1121). However, none of them actually gained super star status.

But they’ll pick up Nana Ayano in 2014, calling her debut video “Super Star”, perhaps as an attempt to generate the same hype as Maria Takagi and Mihiro’s own debuts. Her inaugural video, XVSR-001, was also the first in the XVSR series.

While Nana-chan indeed got the attention she deserved, she did not have a long career. She retired a year later, but eventually came back in 2018, again with Max-A. Unfortunately, her return did not result to a long stint.

Their top of the line Samansa label hasn’t seen a release since 2016, which was also when Max-A began declining. As for the Calen line, it seems that this has become the primary label for Max-A’s general releases, mostly featuring freelancing actresses.

Sadly, Max-A is yet to grab another generational beauty and they seem content with releasing videos from freelancers.
