Demographics of JAV - The Who, Where, Why of Actresses

Time to get real nerdy with it today as we delve into some AV textbooks to find out more about the actresses we see and enjoy on screen. Who they are, where they come from, how they got started, and more questions will be answered. We will be referencing researchers Heung-Wah Wong and Hoi-yan Yau, along with Atsuhiko Nakamura and their findings on AV. This data was gathered by a major casting director with their interview profile sheets. Nearly 600 of them, taken from 2007 to 2010. Citations below.

The Numbers Game and Age

The question of “How many AV actresses are there?” is a difficult one to answer. The researchers estimate that in 2012, with roughly 150 model agencies and an average of 60 actresses signed on, that must mean there are around 9,000 AV actresses. Approximately 2/3s of these actresses retire within the next year and are replaced by incoming newbies in the following year. That sounds incredibly high to me, as I would estimate the number of career AV actresses to be in the high hundreds. Of course, I’m not thinking of the many debuts that come out every year or the one-and-done women who drop a video and leave soon after. The high turnover rate for porn is expected and partly by design. Not everyone is looking to make a career in porn and only do it as a one-off.

Which is fine for the market, as many fans love checking out the fresh new face who decided to do porn. The age distribution supports this debut preference, as 20- to 25-year-olds make up the vast majority of incoming actresses at 60%. Actresses at 26 and up make up less than 30% of incoming debuts. Getting into porn is a younger woman’s game.

Background – Occupation and Birthplace

Not to shatter people’s ideas of the fresh and virginal debut, but many actresses come from an Entertainment background, specifically adult entertainment jobs. Think of Hostesses, Cabaret girls, Soapland, Pink Clubs, and all the risqué jobs. Clear away the largest occupational background of most incoming actresses, and it makes sense. If you are willing to work in risqué jobs, taking off your clothes and fucking on camera isn’t a large leap.

I think people would also be surprised to hear that some famous AV actresses did amateur porn before debuting with a major studio. The biggest occupations that follow after that were Salespeople, Office Workers, Waitresses/Service, Freeters, and Students. Office ladies and students doing porn is the fantasy, and looking at the numbers, a reality. Interesting to see Salespeople be the second-highest category. I imagine it must be a tough job that leads people to look for work elsewhere.

Not on the list that some might be sad to see are Housewives. I’m sorry to say that a wife doing porn behind her husband’s back is mostly a porn plot. However, students deciding to do porn on the side while keeping up with their studies is a plot made for porn. We not only see some of those, but teachers as well. How would you react if you saw your teacher appear on an AV cover?

Misc. – Life Goals, Reasons, and Birthplace

The interview cards asked about their reasons for getting into porn, and many cited monetary reasons, and a few cited fame. Only a small number cited doing porn because of their interest in sex. As for their life goals, their dreams are surprisingly normal. Many want to eventually settle down and get married. Others want to start a career, get a house, live abroad, or start a business. However, 14% were more ambitious and stated that becoming famous was their goal.

Reasons for joining AV

Most actresses came from the Kanto, Chubu, Tohoku, and Hokkaido regions. Many came from the greater Tokyo area, the middle, and the north of Japan. However, many came from nearby regional areas rather than Tokyo City itself. Leading credence to the idea that women come to Tokyo and get into porn. As for sexual experience, a large majority of them have had sex before. With 2-10 making the largest at 39%. Most surprising is seeing 12 people say that they have had over 100 sexual partners.

Now, this study is well over a decade old and this next category shows that most are in recruitment. The majority of actresses were recruited on the streets at nearly 50% and street casting has been heavily discouraged and tamped down in recent years. Internet recruitment was only at 18% at the time and I imagine it’s the leading recruitment tool nowadays. The second largest recruitment pool came from networking, as actresses were referred by a friend or colleague. It makes sense when you see that many of them come from an Entertainment background. I imagine some fellow hostesses or soapland masseuse suggests for them to do porn.

Summary

From the studies, we can say that your average JAV actress is a single woman around the age of 20 to 25. They come from the greater Tokyo region, are sexually experienced and likely worked adult entertainment-related jobs before porn. Most are recruited on the street or referred to by a friend or colleague. Their reason for doing porn is purely financial and their future goal is to get married and settle down.

Even with this study being so old, I doubt much has changed. Other than recruiting probably being more internet-focused and perhaps the age range getting older, thanks to the rise in popularity of Jukujo (Milfs), it’s probably similar if you did the study now. After all porn hasn’t changed much over the years. It attracts younger people who don’t have established careers and are already familiar with sex. The image of innocent and pure debutantes is a common one to see, but the reality is that most in porn are more experienced than we think.
