Good question, why do they do it. Money is one thing but still you cross some lines here, and I wonder how the models are treated and looked upon in Japan. Are they the stars they appear to be in promotion and reviews? If so, it may well motivate most. Even if it is kind of a closed circuit, it is big enough nationwide and to a degree worldwide. Hitomi certainly was/is a star. I also wonder if any of the hardcore develops past acting.
