One day it’s AI generated animals with made up Italian names, and the next it’s….. a cute Japanese woman wearing a grey business suit holding a laptop? Huh. Well, she’s cute. But what is going on here? Here’s a primer and discussion for those who are out of the loop.
Meet Saori Araki (twitter, instagram… aka SAO, her online moniker), she's a former JPOP idol, part time gravure model, and has a real day job as an office lady. She posted the now viral photo of herself wearing a grey business suit with a simple office background. Her hair half-tied and her cheeks puffed up, she wrote in a simple “Good Morning” caption and sent it to the Twitterverse. And then, the internet happened. Her post first gained virality in the Japanese social media sphere, where it garnered hundreds of thousands of likes for it’s first few days. This phenomenon happens from time to time so its not unheard of, as Japan does love cute girls. The photo of SAO with its dull background and a cute office lady in a cheeky smirk is an eclectic mix of the mundane world of the office (representing Japanese work ethic and culture) and the Japanese 'kawaii' (representing the Japanese ‘cute’ beauty standard).
A Challenger Appears!?
But what really sent SAO to the stratosphere is an unexpected character from the other side of the planet: Sydney Sweeney. Days before SAO’s virality, Sydney Sweeney was having her own viral moment. She just appeared in an American Eagle Jeans ad that had some controversial politically coded messaging which led to an uproar of criticisms against the ad campaign stating it’s subtly coded towards eugenics, white supremacy and such. Over the course of the internet sharing their own takes, opinions and memes about Sydney Sweeney, one twitter user shared the meme template of “Which Way Western Man?” which posits a choice between Sydney Sweeney, and her surprise challenger…. SAO?
In a ‘Spark, meet Gasoline’ moment of virality, the humorous comparison between the impressively hot Sydney in tight jeans vs a simply cute SAO in a mundane business suit generated a ton of engagement that went on to have a life of its own. Even removed from context, people are wondering why SAO’s photo is everywhere right now. From SAO’s Japan viral of a million or so engagements (an impressive feat in itself) to ultravirality with 80 Million (and counting) engagements and spinoffs. Some interpret this phenomenon as the funny irony where Sydney Sweeney, representing the conservative ideal of the blue eyed blonde with big boobs and fierce sensuality, has met her match with a innocuous and mundane but obviously cute Japanese Office Lady in SAO’s photo. (Even if it is in a humurous context such as a viral meme)
Part of why the internet rallied behind SAO is due to Sydney’s controversy… but there’s no denying that SAO is plenty cute in her own right! Bringing it all back to JAV (which is what this site is all about), I think JAV has enough silent demand worldwide that the Japanese “kawaii” beauty standard, ever present in JAV, has seeped into the worldwide mainstream as the global phenomenon of the internet merges different cultures together. Japanese women like SAO, with their own unique cuteness, get viral in Japan every so often but now they have their own visibility in the worldwide stage through the internet and social media (with some thanks to other East Asian cultural exports, like Film, Anime and KPOP). Some of them use this virality as jumping off points towards the different worlds of mainstream pop, softcore gravure or even hardcore JAV. With a bit of luck, those who reach some kind of virality or fame in Japan, sometimes seep off outside into other parts of the internet like lucky SAO in this instance. Neat huh?

First on the list is probably the closest dead ringer we’re ever gonna get for the viral Japanese Office Lady Meme. When I first saw the meme, I had to squint my eyes and double check if it was Sumire with an unusual facial expression. Sumire is incredibly cute, fresh faced with a unique iconic look, and slim body attributes that’s the exact same genre as the Meme girl in the spotlight. Unfortunately, I haven’t found an exact analogue with the grey business suit in her catalog.. But, I predict there is going to be some kind of JAV parody of this with Sumire in the near future.
