Rant: The Confusing and Meaningless Labels of Exclusives and Freelancers in JAV

Published : February 6th, 2026 Written by Fried Chikan

Every now and then, someone asks what Tantai or Kikatan means for actresses, and I just respond by saying it means they are exclusive to a studio or freelancers. The truth of the matter is a bit more complex, however, and it's total bunk. Today I need to rant, ZENRA readers, rant about how needlessly complicated and meaningless these labels are.

(Try to make sense of this explainer)

The JAV Industry by Heung-Wah Wong and Hoi-yan Yau

Tantai, Kikau, Kikatan

JAV uses three terms to note the type of video and the actress in it: Tantai (kanji: 単体 / katakana: タンタイ), which means ‘solo’ or ‘standalone’. Basically, it means the main actress, the star of the movie, who is the main attraction. For example, Aika Yamagishi in PRED-738. She’s a contracted star with Premium and the star of this show. The video is all about her, the marketing pushes her at the lead, and fans get the videos for her specifically.

PRED-738 My wife is jealous of my frequent visits to the con cafe and starts her devilish maid service. Her jealousy fuels her radical options, and she offers lewd service that makes me cum. Ayaka Yamagishi

Then we have Kikaku (kanji: 企画 / katakana: キカク), which means ‘project’ or ‘planning’ based movies. These titles are made with an idea/theme first and foremost, with actresses filling in the role. These are done by smaller-name actresses, with the theme being more important than the individual actress, like in SODS-065. The video stars quite a few actresses, and the cover doesn’t focus on any one of them. The video is also from Senz, who are known and popular for making interesting and creative films with unique premises and large ensemble casts. You watch Senz for their videos, not a single actress. It’s a label for a video’s content, and yet it is sometimes used to describe an actress' status.

Finally, we have Kikatan (kanji: 企画単体 / katakana: キカタン), which means ‘Project solo’ or ‘planned solo’ and is a hybrid term between Tantai and Kikaku. It’s for Kikaku-like titles that are made for one actress. For example, Yui Hatano and Ai Uehara are very well-known Kikatan actresses in a video like HNDS-032. It sounds simple unless you think about it, which might be my problem.

Now there’s really little difference in the Tantai versus Kikaku in a star vs theme-based title in practice. What is the difference between Saika Kawakita starring in a Maid title vs a Maid title that has Saika or any other actress in it? Isn’t a Maid title made with the theme in mind first? Also, a Kikatan actress like Yui can and has starred in Kikaku videos, which makes the term even muddier, as it isn’t set. The terms become very muddled in practice, and it doesn’t make sense to use them interchangeably to describe both actresses and videos. Here is a textbook on the varying levels of actress tiers, which only serves to make me more confused.

The Meaninglessness of Exclusives vs Freelance

Now describing actresses and Exclusive or Freelance is much clearer and common among English-speaking fans and at ZENRA. For example, Karen Kaede is Exclusive to Idea Pocket and only makes videos with them. Yui Hatano is a Freelancer and will work with any studio. Yui may or may not get starring solo roles depending on the film, while Karen mainly gets starring roles in solo films. It’s not just a label, as there is a difference in practice between the two. Exclusives release videos less often, usually a month at a time. Meanwhile, Freelancers are uncapped; they can shoot a lot or a little depending on their popularity and work offers. Freelancers are also, on average, more likely to shoot more hardcore and adventurous genres.

Freelance actress

I feel safe to say that we will never see Saika Kawakita do anal sex, no matter how much I want to see it. This should all be easy and clear for everyone, but it quickly gets muddy and even more so nowadays. While freelancers like Yui can work with any studio, that means she can also work with ones that are primarily known for their Exclusive work. She might pop in with Premium, for example. Not bad, that’s actually a good thing.

Saika's face if she took it up the bum

But then we get into the Multi-Exclusives, or as I call them, the fake exclusives. For example, Sumire Kuramoto is currently exclusive to studios Das, Honnaka, and Muku, which means she only shoots with those three now. Sort of taking away the meaning of exclusivity, but I can’t complain about more videos from Sumire. Meanwhile, you have someone like Julia who is basically exclusive with 5 studios. The meaning loses further meaning when we see collaborations like Yuri Hirose, who is Exclusive with Attackers, appear in a video with studio Be Free.

Julia is working all sides

The Ever-Changing Status

Keeping track of actresses' status is also difficult, as they don’t always announce their changes. They might leave a studio quietly and without notice, so it’s hard to know who is with whom at a given moment. Also, rookies that debut with an Exclusive studio might leave quickly too, as their debut exclusivity was only for 1-3 titles. Like with pro athletes, few actresses get to stay in one place for their whole career.

My Headache of the making

What does that mean for you, the normal viewer? Nothing much. You can go on enjoying Rei Kamiki or Ichika Matsumoto’s videos with whatever studio they are with. This problem only exists for people like me who try to learn too much about the industry. Why do they label things the way they do? Why are the labels increasing meaningless? Is this just a language gap at work? I don’t know, but my brain hurts. For those that stick around, here’s a clip of Aika and Akari…one who is an exclusive, the other a multi-exclusive who is better known for her freelance work.

Recently a number of US states and a few countries of note have enacted age verification requirements for adult sites. On the US front at least, legal experts both within and outside of our industry do not believe any will pass a constitutional test. However, since these laws currently are on the books and thus have the ability to be enforced, we are choosing to comply with them at this point in time.

ZENRA uses Bluecheck.me, a third party verification service, to perform this important task easy to install filtering software does infinitely better.

Information used in the verification process is not stored on our servers. Phone number and address verification is instant and uses database cross referencing (no calls, no SMS messages, nothing mailed to the address). ID verification takes about one minute and is performed 'blind' on Bluecheck's side where the ID is reviewed by someone unaware of what service the submitter is attempting to access.

Regardless of what method you choose, it costs you nothing, but does increase the cost of our operations in order to somehow make the internet a 'safer' place.
