BREAKING: Mao Hamasaki's Surprise TV DEBUT In Hong Kong!

I had a strong feeling that Mao Hamasaki wasn’t planning to slow down after retiring from JAV, but I definitely didn’t expect this!

Just a few months after officially relocating from Japan to Hong Kong, the former JAV sensation has landed a role in a mainstream Hong Kong television drama. If you ask me, that’s a pretty impressive way to start the next chapter of your career.

If you’ve been following Mao over the past year, this move probably doesn’t come completely out of nowhere. Long before announcing her retirement from the JAV industry, she had already become a familiar face in Hong Kong’s nightlife scene, regularly performing DJ sets at nightclubs while gradually building a loyal fanbase there.

Little by little, she wasn’t just visiting Hong Kong. She was immersing herself in the culture, and now, after several months, she has finally announced her most exciting project yet.

Taking to X, Mao excitedly shared the news herself: “I’ve just been cast in the Hong Kong drama ‘Your Security Guard Li Bao’an’! Since this is my first Hong Kong drama, I’m super nervous, but since I’m playing a JAV actress in this role, I hope to give it my all to show everyone what Mao-chan is all about!! Please send me your support, everyone in Japan!”

You can almost feel the excitement and her nerves. Making an acting debut in another country’s entertainment industry is no cakewalk, and that too doing it in a language you’re still learning? That’s even more impressive.

When Mao later appeared before reporters, she introduced herself with the same enthusiasm.

“Hi everyone, this is Mao. Uh, this is my first time filming a TV series in Hong Kong, and I was actually given a special role playing Ya Wen alongside Zhu He. Uh, it was Mai Feng who paid special attention to that actress, uh… I’m really looking forward to having many stories unfold with the other guests. Good day. Okay, very pretty.” She seemed a little nervous, but I actually think that’s part of its charm. You can tell she’s genuinely trying, and that seems to be exactly what fans appreciate.

Back in April, Mao announced on Threads that she had officially become a Hong Kong resident after obtaining her Hong Kong ID.

She happily wrote that she was “Officially becoming a Hong Kong resident, living in Hong Kong!” before asking her followers in Cantonese, no less, to recommend local food, attractions and hidden gems.

Since moving, Mao has been actively studying Cantonese, interacting with local fans and immersing herself in the culture. At one point, she even surprised her fans by casually using a famous Cantonese slang expression after someone encouraged her to learn local phrases, earning plenty of laughs and praise online.

Our readers might be wondering why she chose Hong Kong in the first place. Her explanation was something you’d expect. Mao said the city’s location makes it much easier to travel across Asia for DJ gigs, reducing flight time and giving her more opportunities to rest. On top of that, she’s built close friendships there and completely fallen in love with Hong Kong’s food.

For someone who only retired from JAV a short while ago, Mao Hamasaki doesn’t look like someone leaving the entertainment industry behind.

If anything… it feels like she’s quietly pivoted towards an entirely new one, that too in a different country. Kudos to her! And judging by how quickly Hong Kong has embraced her, I have a feeling this won’t be the last time we hear Mao-chan making headlines outside Japan.
