JAV Battle: Bath or Love Hotel?

Baths, while they could take the form of a traditional onsen, a sentou, or a spa, have a very distinct look and feel to them. The concept will also feel foreign to those not accustomed to Japanese culture, as many other countries consider bathing to be a private matter - meanwhile, in Japan, it's normal that those of the same sex bathe together.

Building upon that, vulnerability is a major attribute to the bath setting. As mentioned already, all people in a bath are either fully nude, wearing a towel, or about to undress. While this does take away from the element of clothing removal, the nudity isn't sudden or part of the scene, it's just a natural part of the environment.

Baths are usually populated by several people, so even when a scene in a JAV might only involve say two people, there's still the implication that there might be others nearby. The risk of possibly being found out adds adrenaline to a situation that can already be quite sexy. Granted, I suppose this would apply to unisex baths, since in reality, such baths are split by sex - either way, the concept still applies.

Baths are just so unique and unlike other settings. Actresses' skin is soaked and gleaming, steam could get things slightly hot and cloudy, and it all creates a highly romantic atmosphere, especially since most actresses in bath JAV are straight up nude. I believe the only thing that comes close is a beach setting, but the bath is the perfect example as to how there can be enhanced sensuality without actual escalation. Take for example, women washing each others' backs, rinsing shampoo from their hair, or pouring warm water over their bodies. While these are innocent acts on their own, they're also packed full of erotic potential.

Touching doesn't feel awkward or misplaced in a bath setting, and it's common to be within short distance of other people in such a scenario. This is easily one of the best aspects of baths since it allows for slow and methodical escalation that feels natural and not staged/deliberate.

A lot of the time, baths are immaculate on a visual level. Onsens in particular, with their exposure to nature, and that combined with water on everyone's skin, rising steam, and the warm light, it can create quite a breathtaking shot. Sure, many might not think this contributes much when it comes to the actual sex scenes, but I think such a trait helps make a JAV beautiful in more ways than one. I realize the sex is probably the most important aspect of a JAV in many people's eyes, but a beautiful setting can help establish mood and make a movie more memorable.

The group nature of baths always weighs in the back of everyone's minds, even when a scene might involve only two people. They might start getting romantic and things escalate into penetration or sexy favors, but there's always the thought that there might be other bathers nearby, or that footsteps might approach, or staff could happen upon them. This gives bath JAV a different kind of tension and energy, and while there are plenty of movies out there that don't take advantage of this (though, there are several videos with bath orgies), there is at least potential. This helps insert risk into the scene without there needing to be any conflict between the performers.

Baths have a lot of things going for them, but there are some downsides to the environment. It can be limiting at times, for example, as since the area revolves around bathing, watchers expect wet skin, towels, full nudity - it can be hard to incorporate other fetishes. It's not impossible sure, but other fetishes can sometimes feel out of place. Scenes often are rather formulaic as they mostly follow along the lines of: enter bath, wash, relax, then sexual activity. This usual humdrum formula can cause pacing to really suffer.

On top of this, while baths can be visually stunning at times, they are also stuck to using a lot of the same designs. Yeah, maybe a JAV could make a more elaborate design for the walls or make a more unique outdoor setting, but the environment really can only do so much. Baths feel much more confined compared to other JAV settings, and that can cause scenes to be redundant, too expected, and boring (after watching so many).

Another negative aspect is the outfits - that being, there usually are none. A lot of JAV set in baths obviously don't use outfits because it's a bath setting, and people are meant to clean themselves. Bath environments typically allow either a towel or full nudity, and while that can be sexually thrilling, it obviously gets really boring after so many JAV. Outfits can allow for so many fantasies and can appeal to so many different tastes. They can also set the mood or give off an actresses' implications without her saying a word - bath settings lose all that power with their rather limited wardrobe. Those who prefer a slower, more gradual buildup to the sex, will often find themselves disappointed too.
