DMM Magazine Throwback: 2006

If you know me from my Retro Review series, you know I like learning about the past ladies of JAV. Today, we are starting a new series that takes a look at the history of JAV through the lens of DMM Magazines. First is 2006, back when flip phones and skinny jeans were the rage, Namie Amuro was a major J-pop star, the Nintendo Wii launched, and MySpace was the social media site to be at. Let’s dive into JAV in 2006.

Looking at these girls, and they are all so cute, even the ones going for a sexier look. They look far more natural and untouched compared to talent today. However, I’d also say they, as a whole, aren’t as pretty as talent today. It’s also interesting to see studios like Madonna there. You can definitely see a change from their previous talent pool from back then. Those look like legit older women. Also interesting to note is the popularity of mononyms such as Honoka, Marin, Yoko, and Koharu.

The magazines, of course, are Ad space magnets. Advertising studios and their upcoming works. The hardcore studio Dogma shows up often in interviews and in gimmicky stunts. Like this one on stage contest about finding their next big pornstar. A contest for Dogma sounds cursed.

I was also mildly surprised to see the magazines include content and advertising from their rivals, Prestige and SOD. It is a DMM-owned magazine, but it seemed fine with talking about their competitor’s videos and talent from time to time. Highlighting some of the other special titles, like this SOD Wedding. A way too involved fake wedding that includes a banquet hall, a cake, a full crowd, and a row of bridesmaids with bouquets in sensitive holes.

Look at this promo for a Madonna video, back before they expanded into a MILFy empire. Interesting to see the talent they were using back then, a bit different from the ladies we see today. Not as top-heavy, so to speak.

This is why I like looking into the past, because it introduces me to things I haven’t seen before, like this seafloor fucking. Older JAV was wild, and finding out about studio Cross, they seem wilder than most others. And look at that tagline, what kind of copywriting is that to advertise for a video? Now these special videos are always more fun and interesting to see than to actually watch for eroticism. Eye-turning stunts to get fans to notice what Cross is all about.

Third is a busty pair by the name of Rin Aoki. The blurb mentions she only had two videos but already exploded onto the rankings, probably because of her modelling and Gravure background. Looking into her, she was around for a long while. Turning into a curvy and plump Milf actress who seems to have petered out in 2020.

The magazine also has a PR section where members of the industry can write in about what’s happening in the industry, give recommendations on what to watch, talk about what they’ve worked on, or just about anything. And I mean anything. Like this one DEEPS PR staff member who decided to talk about a bad burn they got on their foot. It was healing weird, and how their friend said it looked like a foot pussy. People in the industry are built differently.
