Nanami Matsumoto might’ve done away with her X account, but this week, via her for fans only X account… the kind reserved for her loyal fans only, Nanami dropped an explosive tweet that had her fans talking.

“To everyone in this special account,” she wrote, “I’m switching from being an AV actress to a day job, so I’ll be quietly continuing my activities without letting anyone around me find out.”

For a second, I thought her statement had a striking resemblance to Rin’s. Did they mutually agree upon pushing out similar statements?

Nanami went on: “To all of you who’ve supported me all along, I’ll keep sharing my presence with just you from now on. I’m deleting all past posts on this account and restarting as a different person, so keep it a secret that I’m Nanami Matsumoto and watch over me from now on.”

Restarting as a different person? I wonder what she meant by it.

Back in January, in a brief column, I’d already mentioned how she framed it as a graduation rather than a disappearance… more of a pivot. After nine years in the industry, she had finally made a call for change, and it was believable.

What fascinates me isn’t that she’s choosing a “day job.” Many actresses eventually do so. The fact that she’s handling the transition so well while rebranding privately.

Earlier this year, she had dropped breadcrumbs for fans. A carefully worded tweet hinting at “exclusive” content post-graduation was enough to keep her fans' tongues wagging.

Classic Nanami.

It’s almost mischievous how she quietly directed traffic elsewhere. Fans didn’t need a link, I guess; they followed on instinct. Curiosity does the rest.

And let’s be honest, when she said “I’ll be quietly continuing my activities without letting anyone around me find out”, you know she has the dual life figured out. It’d be intriguing to see how she manages to juggle both roles, office worker by day and an adult creator by night.

Deactivating her primary X account was symbolic, to say the least. In a way, it shows how she’s creating a barrier between who she was publicly and who she intends to be now. Yet she made sure to make her most dedicated supporters aware: Keep watching.

So is this truly the end of Nanami Matsumoto?

Not quite.

It’s a rebrand wrapped in exclusivity. Only a select few fans who pay for her content have access to her.

Rin Okae sent out the most casual retirement announcement I've seen in recent memory.

The 40-year-old did what most wouldn’t expect with just a single, understated confession pushed into the feed like it wasn’t about to close a 16-year chapter.

That’s how she did it.

“I’ve finished filming my last work,” she wrote, almost casually. “I think reservations will start soon. Well, technically, the last work has already been released. But there are still unreleased works. I’ll quietly fade out.”

It’s almost as if she were exhausted after a 16-year-long run in JAV.

For 16 years, she played the typical MILF next door without thinking of topping charts. She filmed relentlessly with every major JAV maker in the know. Rin had a considerably lengthy career, and now she’s stepping away because she has reached that saturation point in her career.

“My second career is as a company employee,” she revealed. “That’s exactly why I want to do this quietly.”

There’s a practicality to that statement that hit me harder. At this point in her life, she’d rather go back to a desk job than get naked in front of the camera. That clearly shows that she’s choosing stability. She could’ve chosen to do soapland, but Rin chose this as a more stable career option.

And then she said something that hit hard, not that most of us are not really aware of the fact.

“In the AV industry, your pay keeps dropping after your debut. My take-home pay for my debut work was about 15 times what it is now.”

Fifteen times. That is really a sad affair.

We glamorize debuts. We celebrate longevity. But we rarely talk about the financial curve that slopes downward the longer an actress stays in the JAV industry. And she is likely facing the effects of it. In reality, a mature actress, she admitted, eventually reaches a plateau. “I’m not exactly popular,” she said plainly. “As a mature actress, that’s pretty much where I am now. Depends on the project, though.”

There’s humility in that. And a hint of exhaustion.

As expected, fan reactions poured in almost immediately: “Your work was amazing, and I looked forward to it every time. I’m really sad and lonely now,” one wrote. Another said, “You’re retiring? I’ll miss you. I loved your work. Best of luck in your next chapter.” And perhaps my favorite: “I loved how erotic the kisses were. It’s such a shame. Thank you for all your hard work.”

It’s always the little details fans remember. The performances. The expressions.

What strikes me most isn’t that she’s leaving. It’s how she’s leaving. Rin did not attempt to hype her legacy. No dramatic claims of being misunderstood. Just an honest acknowledgment of where she stands and where she’s headed post JAV

But the good thing is that there are still unreleased works in the pipeline, so fans will have something to hold onto.

Just a quiet fade into a different life, one where her mornings might involve office meetings instead of filming calls.

And somehow I feel that’s relieving on her part.
