About ZAD

The owner of ZENRA, subtitler of around a third of updates (and all updates up to about 2018!), the writer of all reviews, and more often than not, the person who replies to user support emails. Outside of JAV, I am a voracious reader (history, theology, philosophy, and science) and try to clear 7-10 books a month. See the questions below (or on my profile page) for my views on JAV.

JAV Q&A

What first got you into JAV?
This probably was due to deciding to take Japanese in high school over Latin-based languages along with having the libido appropriate to someone that age. I could not tell you how exactly, but somehow I stumbled upon WinMX, stumbled upon Japanese adult video, and surprisingly the first thing I recall seeing was in fact 全裸 (ZENRA) content—aka casual stark nudity. I found it so unusual that even today it has left its mark. After all, what’s the site called again?
How many years have you been following JAV?
Since the year 2000 (really).
What keeps you excited about JAV after all this time?
A combination of a healthy libido and the industry’s ability to keep coming up with incredibly creative ideas that constantly leave the west playing second fiddle. To this day, I can’t come up with any example of a western studio coming up with something as creative as SOD on a *bad* day.
Which JAV niches do you always come back to?
As noted two questions up, movies that “normalize” sexuality. Not necessarily those with free use themes which remain quite rare, but movies where sex is not necessarily “sex”, but just something that needs to be done. Case in point Penis Washing or the famous Aoyama Lesbian Massage series. Outside of personal libido-related preferences, people monitoring and reality movies as they show it’s the journey, not the destination that matters most.
What kind of videos do you usually avoid?
Vanilla movies. Sorry if this offends many, but the top-selling studios and the top-selling performers in Japan at most any time film the most dreadfully boring and soulless movies. The production values may be great and the women beautiful, but I’d rather see someone like Nao Jinguuji simply playing a random amateur in a people monitoring in a van movie than cheating wife in her 200th iteration of playing the same role.
Which studios do you respect the most right now?
A better question for me at least is if I was given the option to work production at any studio, which would it be and the answer would obviously be SOD Create. For me, they are the Mecca of JAV, the most creative, the biggest risk-takers, and are everything that makes this industry what it is today. This does not mean other studios we show are “less good”, but SOD forever holds a special place in my heart: the original indies studio that went wild and shook the industry to its core.
Do you tend to follow specific actresses, studios, or themes first?
Themes. That’s basically how we license movies on ZENRA and from our data, paying users prefer this as well. It’s less about WHO is in a movie (though top-tier bodies always help!), but what the movie is about. New or old, it makes no difference given our site’s not so secret secret sauce.
What details do you pay attention to that casual fans might miss?
As we subtitle everything by hand, the sheer amount of bloopers in most any JAV movie—even by the biggest studios. It’s pretty rare to work on a movie for days or even weeks and not catch things the editor at the studio missed.
What makes a JAV review genuinely useful in your opinion?
Reviews at ZENRA are all written by me and I always try to not simply sum up what a movie is about like most other adult sites do. It’s cheap, it’s lazy, and nobody wants to read it—not even search engine crawlers! Users can see the screenshots, the trailers, and supercuts to understand the gist of a movie. A review should be a combination of adding in extra information which is quite easy to conjure thanks to all the time spent subtitling along with how the movie affected the reviewer.
What do good subtitles add to the JAV viewing experience?
I don’t live in a cave and am aware that “AI” subtitles exist all over the place. Sadly—and fortunately—for us, the quality remains at best “meh” and most of the time abysmal. For a simple vanilla POV movie (ie, VR), dialing in auto-subtitles my do the trick, but for the bulk of our updates, without a human being involved, the quality would be atrocious. If one is to pay for subtitles, they should be perfect and “Japanese TV variety show” level is what we aim at which is even better than what one sees on pirate sites (of course), exceeds Netflix, and even may surpass major motion pictures. J-Variety TV is a budget affair but holy cow do they nail the subtitles!
How much do cover art and thumbnails influence your expectations?
Most may not realize that for all our updates the screenshots are chosen by hand! This is to ensure we get the best angles, the best positions, moments where there is no blur, where ideally subtitles show. Thus, the visuals go beyond the box covers, trailers, and supercuts. Even previewing a movie at ZENRA is going to be a supernal experience compared to any other site on the internet.
What is one niche you have grown to appreciate more over time?
Male nipple stimu—just kidding. Sorry to offend anyone, but we should take all the DVDs of movies that focus on that theme and bury them in the Atari ET landfill for all time.
What is one JAV trend you have noticed in recent years?
Do you like “creampies”? I sure hope so because that’s all you’re going to get nowadays. I can understand the economy of it: that they’re essentially all faked means you can time the shoot even better, but enough’s enough: have the actor finish in a rubber which thankfully still happens but not as often as one would like. There is no “real creampie” industry ban. It just comes down to finances and this is one thing I feel the West does a lot better at.

Recently a number of US states and a few countries of note have enacted age verification requirements for adult sites. On the US front at least, legal experts both within and outside of our industry do not believe any will pass a constitutional test. However, since these laws currently are on the books and thus have the ability to be enforced, we are choosing to comply with them at this point in time.

ZENRA uses Bluecheck.me, a third party verification service, to perform this important task easy to install filtering software does infinitely better.

Information used in the verification process is not stored on our servers. Phone number and address verification is instant and uses database cross referencing (no calls, no SMS messages, nothing mailed to the address). ID verification takes about one minute and is performed 'blind' on Bluecheck's side where the ID is reviewed by someone unaware of what service the submitter is attempting to access.

Regardless of what method you choose, it costs you nothing, but does increase the cost of our operations in order to somehow make the internet a 'safer' place.
