A subculture otaku turned professional Japanese translator who spent much of his youth hanging around Kabukicho and Shibuya. He eventually moved permanently to Tokyo after the pandemic and even came surprisingly close to marrying a retired JAV performer once. In the end, though, it wasn’t meant to be!

What first got you into JAV?
Curiosity, honestly. I was already deep into Japanese games, music, and internet culture as a teenager, so JAV eventually became another rabbit hole. Once I started learning Japanese, I realized there was a whole layer of humor, wordplay, and cultural context that most overseas fans never got to experience.
Which JAV niches do you always come back to?
Plus-size (Pocchari, Muchimuchi, Voluptuous, BBW, whatever) will probably always be my number one weakness. What can I say? I just like ’em big. Beyond that, I have a soft spot for bizarre game show concepts and zany situations.
What is one underrated JAV niche you think more fans should explore?
Story-heavy productions. When the writing and acting are actually good, the payoff feels much more satisfying. Also, the Japanese game show style productions can be completely unhinged in the best possible way.
What details do you pay attention to that casual fans might miss?
Dialogue. The way performers talk to each other, slang, dialects, awkward jokes, and all the obscure cultural references that don't survive a literal translation. That often tells you more than what's happening on screen.
